Sample Panels to be Illustrated

Panel 1

(Art directions are in bold.)

Ellie Wyken Benet has rushed to her aunt Estelle's retirement home dismayed about her aunt's engagement to Randolph Inverness. When she meets Conner, she thinks he is Randolph. Elllie is blushing; Connor Iverness looks annoyed as he fixes her with a piercing gaze. He’s elegantly dressed in a light-colored Armani suit and wearing expensive alligator shoes. Ellie is wearing light colored dress slacks and a white, women's fitted dress shirt with three-quarter length sleeves. The location for this panel is the waiting room in the main building of an upscale retirement community.

NARRATIVE: Ellie blushes as Connor's mesmerizing green eyes seem to pin her in place, sending the most delicious shivers down her spine.

ELLIE (THINKING): Wow. What a hunk. He must have them eating out his hands.

ELLIE: I'm Eleanor Estelle Wyken Benet. Estelle Wyken-Huros is my aunt—whom I love and intend to protect, for your information.

CONNOR:

Bully for you. Are you part of this setup then? I warn you, I'll fight this ridiculous marriage. And you don't want to go up against me.

Panel 2

Same location as previous panel. Estelle and Randolph enter arm and arm, both beaming, dressed in golf outfits. They have just completed a round of golf and have returned to the main building for lunch in the dining room. Ellie appears perplexed. Connor looks a bit surprised.

ESTELLE: Oh, I see you've both met. Wonderful ! Randy and I would love to have you stay for lunch.

RANDOLPH :

Hello, Connor! Meet the fiancée, Estelle. Ain't she a beauty? She's a little bitty thing—in fact, I call her “Bitty”—but don't let that fool you. Come on, let's eat. I'm starving!

Character Descriptions

Story/Character Background

The characters in this story are wealthy. “Bitty” and Randolph live in a very upscale Arizona retirement community that could be best described as a resort. It is important that the characters be portrayed as elegant and stylish in both appearance and posture. The upscale nature of this story needs to jump off the page. The main characters wear expensive, well-tailored clothes, even when dressed for golf or other casual activities. Overall they have a sophisticated air about them.

Other Information

Style
We are looking for illustrations reminiscent of the classic romance style, but with a more contemporary look. In general, we are looking for color illustrations with clean lines of realistic people, places, and things.

Content
Should you become one of our illustrators, you will work from prepared 60- to 70-panel scripts. The narrative, dialogue, and a description of the action in each panel, as well as a general description of the characters, should provide the necessary information to complete your illustrations.

As a general rule, our romance stories contain situations found in typical mass-market romance fiction publications. As described in our Writers' Submission Guidelines, these are “... romantic, passionate character-driven stories with a strong element of adventure and/or suspense.” Stories will contain intimate encounters between adult men and women.

Characters
A typical script could include characters of various ethnic, nationality, and age groups. These are characters drawn from real life. Children and teenagers should look age appropriate and not like smaller adults. It is important to remember that the audience for these stories is women. Romance fiction offers an escape from everyday life. This is why many of our characters are rich, well-dressed, upscale people. The look for these characters is very important. This includes their physical characteristics, hairstyles, clothes, jewelry, and bearing. Expect to draw a lot of handsome men and beautiful women.
